Sunset 5 September - Jenna Holmes
A meditative experience to watch the sunset unfolding – something lost in the background of life most days.

I am not a morning person usually and have probably seen very few sunrises, so it was quite exciting to see the sun peeking above the horizon. (I think I let out a little squeal!)

I thought of nature and how bold and big it is. How much bigger than us.

...each building, space and view from the box was attached to a memory or thought, many of which I hadn’t considered for so long.

It was lovely to have an hour to myself with no distractions, watching over the city that has been my home for the last 20+ years.

The light dimmed slowly as the city twinkled with artificial lights.

Although there was movement, cars, people, even the wind in the trees, overall there was a real sense of stillness.

The city, completely unaware of itself, came to life before me and it was a joy to behold.

Gosh, it went so quickly! I couldn’t believe it when John came in half way through. It was so lovely to feel so close to the city but be so far above it.

Sepia tones being washed by light like a damp cloth over an old painting, bringing out the view step by step and the colours one by one, so much green brought to life by blue.

Cloud blocks the sun but watching how the dock area changes as the lights go out. Could hear gulls and the sound of traffic.

Tonight was, unfortunately, very grey and overcast so no chance of a sunset over the city.
It has been an experience to see the city from such a height. Many of the buildings take on a different perspective from above.

Such a journey to have. Watching over the city started so quickly getting my bearings, identifying the buildings and finding places of my life. Then the memories start flooding back of times in Queens Gardens over the years with friends and family, then scanning the city for more. Wondering how my families’ memories would differ.

Hot summer’s day
Bright sunshine
Hazy sky
Closed my eyes
Listened
Roaring helicopter
Whirring sirens
City life
Opened and watched
Busy city

Nature is unpredictable, that’s what makes it so organically beautiful. During my Vigil, the viewing booth was overtly covered with condensation on the outside. This meant there was no clear view of the City. However, I wasn’t going to let that stop me. There were drizzles of clear on the glass.

What can I say? This was an absolutely amazing experience. I wasn’t really sure what to expect!
Once I arrived into the ‘box’ I didn’t know where to look first. My eyes flitted from left to right and back again. I moved from West to East and back again.

Wow . . . . My Vigil began with two sunrises. The first saw the sun sneakily rise above the horizon then disappear into a bank of cloud only to rise again. A kind of solar B.O.G.O.F.
I thought this was symbolic of Covid and the restrictions we have faced. Hopefully, we can all rise to a brighter future as a city together.
