Sunset 23 January - Louise Burnett
The weather was gloomy – no sun at all and the sky and the Humber were the same colour but it felt as though the city were cocooned in a grey blanket, separate and separated.

Despite being a Hull-born girl, there are so many buildings and streets I’ve never noticed before. I also love the idea that ‘life’ was going on below me and I was quietly observing – a once-in-a-lifetime experience for sure!

It’s like being at a relative’s house, comforting and everyday. I also had the song lyric: ‘Certain as the sun rising in the east,’ from Beauty and the Beast on a loop in my head.

Shotwell, Tilson Scaffolding, Biffa, Cycles only, frozen cone, bandstand, bridge, low haze, Covid graffiti, old homes, new homes, the grey and then the light.

It is a beautiful and unforgettable experience because for the first time I discovered West side of Hull when the sun was setting down and I also enjoyed the blue sky – was poetic and how good looking.

Reds, pinks and oranges as the sun rises above the Humber, the glow reflecting on the water, picking out buildings.

After the EU referendum, I fell out with the city. But I realise Hull’s so much more than politics. We can be reconciled. We can get back together. What a wonderful opportunity I’ve had to realise that.

An amazing way to start my birthday!
A wonderful hour spent in a tranquil haven, whilst the hustle and bustle goes on around.

The sunset of the first day of my 39th year
Amber clouds to the west
Violet hue to the east

I’m not from Hull originally, but over the years I have found myself repeatedly returning. So much so that I would say it is my home away from home: the place I go to when I need to feel safe and comforted.

Interesting to view the city from this angle. Will visit some of the old buildings and try and find out why some of the features are as they are.

My vigil, my city, my home.
Like an awakening, the sun began to rise
The eyelid slowly opening to reveal the light
The humming of the traffic sounds like breathing air

Perfect blue sky, full moon, still and calm. What a fantastic experience.

I hadn’t expected to see the full moon; I had been hoping for a beautiful sunrise and wasn’t disappointed. The view to the east was warm yellow and orange and the sun gradually rose up over the Humber.
10/02/22
Gradually, as the vigil continued, I began to map out my life around the city – where I was born, the different areas I lived in and finally a move to (just) beyond the horizon.
10/02/22
Looking east to Paull, my home, I could see clearly the cooling towers at Saltend, quite a sight on darker mornings when it is still lit up like something out of Star Wars.

Eternal father, strong to save
As I watched o’er Humber’s wave
Who made the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep

Although there was fog the experience was amazing. Seeing a little bit more of the city minute by minute was very interesting.

Wow is the word. Fantastic sunset. So clear. The colours were unbelievable. So many changes.

The day began with silhouettes and shadows. It was a privilege to watch over the city which I feel has watched over me all my life. The City is the people.
