Sunrise 21 January - Emily Peach

A different perspective . . . at home I have to crane my neck to see the sunrise, but here in my wooden shelter above the city, there is nothing to impede my view.  Reds, pinks and oranges as the sun rises above the Humber, the glow reflecting on the water, picking out buildings.  And in the other direction, the moon, bright and clear, mottled white and grey, against a clear blue winter’s sky.  I gaze down at the city, picking out familiar sites and landmarks, peering into streets and alleys I didn’t know were there.  I stood shoulder to shoulder with Wilberforce on his column, watching over the city, gazing to the Humber and the Bridge.  I try and remember what I know of the history and geography of Hull, and follow the streets and lines of the Old Town.  What a different view it would have been then.  And I watch the people – in their cars, on bikes, walking – strolling, or rushing – in conversation, somewhere to be.  Oblivious to me watching from above – although I am here in plain sight, if they would only look up.  Keeping vigil.  Praying blessing over the city and its people.
