Sunset 11 January - Helen Porter

Today, my turn as Vigil to watch over Hull at sunset.

To the West, born and brought up, school and first jobs, oldest friends.

To the East, my home and family for 36 years.

The vista brings back so many memories and reassurance of familiar voices and places I have known all my life.

Today there is blue sky, that big beautiful sky and I can see for miles.  Hull is flat but the Yorkshire Wolds look closer than I realised.

There are lots of ships heading out on the tide to faraway places.  The hum of traffic.  The sound of seagulls.

I am spoilt with the sunset shining gold onto the steely grey of the flat calm Humber.  The Humber Bridge looking magnificent, joining North and South.

Thank you dad and grandad for sharing your love of this place.  They would have loved this.  I will pass this on to my grandson born today 11th January 2022.

Thank you HULL – Home.  X
