Sunrise 2 April - Paulette Appleby

The warmth and smell of the wood of the box are the first sensation of stepping inside, leaving an instant sense of comfort.

The bank of dark cloud looked unwelcome at first but at the base, hovering on the horizon, was a pink grapefruit coloured blush starting to appear.  As seagulls wheeled across the view a hole appeared in the cloud, tinged with a lemon glow.

A siren wailed, a bus trundled over the bridge drawing my eyes to the high tide on the River Hull, heading towards the River Humber.

A barge drifted to port along the Humber and another headed to the mouth of the estuary, where a cloud appeared to have become a giant seagull flying to the sea.  Eyes drifted back to the hole slowly opening up and the edge of the sun tipping the edges of the clouds in pink.  The hole starting to look like a crocodile gazing at the increasing grapefruit, as gradually the pinky-orange and lemon merged and the sun glowed white.  The warmth burning away the rest of the cloud and heating my face.

Turning west, the reflection captured in the opposite glass and bouncing off Queen’s Gardens willows.  Hull Royal shining in the distance.

Peace has descended and calm is restored!
