Sunset 6 August 2021 - PHOEBE ADSHEAD

Amazing to see Hull in all of its glory!

I loved looking out to all the buildings steeped in their history and wondering what may have happened behind some of those windows all those many moons ago.

Sunrise 6 August 2021 - DANNY HUTSON

Today is my 39th birthday. And what a way to start the day. It was cloudy to begin with and stayed dark until the last 10 or 20 minutes or so.

I felt emotional at one point, thinking and reminiscing about all the experiences I’ve had while growing up in Hull. Hull born and bred

Sunset 5 August 2021 - NICHOLA ROE

Experiencing the city from above is an opportunity you don’t get to do often, particularly when you’re left alone to observe the sunset. This is something I will never forget. Watching the drizzle come down and the city lights begin to sparkle reminded me of one of the things I love most about this country; the rain – well, drizzle.

Sunrise 5 August 2021 - CHRIS CHURCH

I saw the sun come up over the horizon like a red balloon slowly emerging. Then gradually becoming yellow and lighter until I couldn’t look at it any more. An amazing experience. I watched seagulls flying at my height and small flocks of birds landing on Queen’s Gardens.

So strange to see the world going about its business in the usual hustle and bustle below whilst observing it in complete solitude and silence above fantastic views of a still busy Queen’s Gardens whilst to the east a ferry sets sail to Rotterdam.

It would have been easy to sit back and reflect on what the past 18 months has taken away from me (and everyone) but the vigil gave me the opportunity to reflect on just how much life and energy is out there.

A unique and rewarding experience – an hour doesn’t seem that long at all!

Visually.

Thought I was going to be unlucky as I entered the box the heavens opened and visibility fell. But I was lucky enough to see a large rainstorm pass over the city as the visibility cleared and the sun broke through I was treated to one of the most magnificent sunsets I have ever seen. The sun bright, casting an orange glow across the tops of the buildings.

Sunrise 3 August 2021 - JAN LOFT

So beautiful seeing Hull awaken. Couldn’t get my bearings to start with as everything looked so different from above, so small, close together.

When the sun started to rise it was so red and really round, the clouds kept playing with me and moving to block the sunrise but it wasn’t frustrating – more intriguing.

Sunset 2 August 2021 - SARAH WATSON

My life chapters spread beneath my feet.

At school below me. Gallery probably now a sports hall at the academy. Quay Art in Princes Quay. Modern poky flats and period houses I lived in. St Mary’s where I got married. Big investments at the time but seemingly inconsequential now.

Permanence and change.
Reality versus expectation.

I had a strong sense of each of us living very different lives within a tight structure and how this regimentation suits some, but not all.

Good to take my turn in watching over the city which has been my home for over 50 years – so much change happening to the city centre which is sad to see but seeing so much scaffolding to the building is nice to see.

Having an opportunity to watch over the City as it wakes was an honour and privilege.
A City that has seen change over the years, a city that is struggling to survive like many but still has a beating heart to fight on.
