So, I am unexpectedly the Vigil for tonight. A crash on the Humber Bridge means the allotted Vigil cannot cross over. An hour to think, reflect and ponder. My thoughts were all over the place. Family and friends who are still with me and those who have departed.

Although you can’t take anything into the shelter with you, you still end up taking yourself. For my hour I reflected on how hard I was finding it to get out of my own way and enjoy the experience on its own terms. I have always struggled to be present and in the moment.

A sense of tranquillity and peacefulness as the sun began to set over our great city. Great to be able to visualise the suburbs/villages of Hull as well as the inner city. We are blessed with some amazing architecture that has stood the test of time whilst being cursed by some of the post-war monstrosities, the worst of which seem to be the most recent builds.

The City Centre:
- so busy
- even the river flows non-stop
- so misty
- today it clears before the sun
- such traffic
- a ferry reverses into its berth
- no one is collecting eggs (that I can see).

Being in this small room for one hour made me have four strange feelings:
1. I feel time has stopped and does not count any more.
2. Since I was a child I was dreaming of flying and for a moment I wanted to break the glass and jump but
my self-confidence said, “Wait, Baz. Stop.

An interesting way to start my birthday.
Two thoughts:
1. The familiar looks very different from a new perspective.
2. Very pleasing to see how much of the city is made up of trees.

I was fortunate to be able to hear the bells from Hull Minster during the second half of the vigil which added to the magic of the evening. What a privilege to be able to keep watch over our little city as it settles down for the night.

What a lovely start to my 35th birthday. This month also marks five years in the UK for me. I spent a lot of my vigil thinking about the architecture and history of Hull. How diverse the buildings and its people are. A beautiful halo of light came down over East Hull and the docks throughout my vigil.

Many thoughts ran through my mind whilst I kept vigil in the shelter. My main thought was how poignant is it that I was stood in a Freedom Festival volunteers uniform looking over the city with William Wilberforce (his statue) in front of me.

I have observed an overcast, cloudy Sunday morning today but this certainly didn’t take away from the experience. Total peace and serenity.

I’ve been up on the roof of the college many times but always working. A totally different experience to stop and really look and think for an extended period of time. .

Thank you for the opportunity to see my city from a viewpoint that I would normally never get the chance. The clouds broke enough for me to see an amazing sunrise before the big red orb was engulfed by cloud.

The sense of understanding or evaluating my life didn’t strike me in the Vigil box. However, a greater love of my home city came over me as I glanced out toward the Humber Bridge – a symbol of change and development which left an everlasting mark. Hull has always aimed to change.

I felt calm, invigorated, de-stressed yet energised after that experience. It was a rush to get here but once in the box everything else melted away and I could just experience the city in a new way and enjoy the space, the view, the light.

I don’t often allow myself time to think about my life over the last few years and how many members of my family and friends I have unfortunately lost. This gave me the opportunity to do so.

I wanted to spend this hour enjoying seeing my city from a new angle, from a place of solitude, with the time to take things in. And for the most part, I did. To the east, the city is surprisingly green; trees abound and in places seem to dominate.

I enjoyed the opportunity of seeing our City from this perspective. Many memories of various buildings were brought to the fore. Work, education, my dad’s place of work on the Docks. I really felt at one with the environment, the wind blowing through the vents and the trees moving, we were one.

Time is a funny thing. Too fast, too slow. It is a rare moment indeed that we have no real concept of time. Rarer still, to stop for a full hour (ish), actually stop. Separated from phone, from watch, from notifications, emails, phone calls – I could finally block out the noise of my world and tune in to the muted sounds of traffic, the odd seagull and an insistent forklift in the distance.

With all the chaos going on in the world, especially in Afghanistan, it was lovely to witness the city go from being busy to going peaceful as the sun set over Hull and the lights illuminating the city landmarks and transforming it into a peaceful evening.

Sunrise today, yesterday and tomorrow will happen. Today I was there to see it. Knowing the sun has risen for millions of years in the past and will do for millions of years in the future! Problems in my head knowing that it is the earth that is moving and not the sun.
