Sunset 15 December - Imogen Glazer

I feel blessed to have seen the sunset.  My main focus was on the West of the city.  That’s where the sun was and it is also the side from which I hail.  As I stood looking out over the City I wondered . . . was it deliberate that the box was placed by the great William Wilberforce – freedom fighter – we had a similar vantage point.  I wondered why Queen’s Gardens was in the pattern that it was – geometric.  I watched the lines of traffic and every now and again heard the blare of sirens and saw the flashing lights wending their way through the traffic.  I watched different clouds floating through the sky and felt almost close enough to touch the fluffy ones.  There were a few different types.  The cotton ball ones, the one that looked like angry sea foam, dark ominous looking ones, ones with a metallic lining.

The sun began as a pale yellow orb in the sky that lit up the water beneath it, showing up the ripples of the river.  It also lit up the top part of one of the buildings opposite.  I was surprised by its warmth and enjoyed basking in it.  As the sun went down I observed more and more birds, mainly seagulls in the sky – must be making their way home to bed.

The most incredible thing was when the sun began to set, how quickly it set.  I felt that you could see it rolling along the embankment on the other side of the river, changing colour from pale yellow to orange as it went.  With every blink a little bit more disappeared so that at points I tried not to blink to see if that would slow it down.  It didn’t and finally it left behind the embers of clouds and I wondered what the people near to where it had gone down could see.

Thank you for the experience of almost being on top of the City or at least at one, a watcher.  X
