Sunrise 6 January - Stella Harkness

How do I feel?  Peaceful but energised.

How did I spend the time?  At times I simply watched the people down below: students arriving at Hull College, commuters driving into the multi-storey car park opposite.  Sometimes I just listened: to the seagulls squawking, a bell chiming – but mostly the noisy hum of the traffic.

I thought of all the different people I had met in the city over the years: at City of Culture events, at the theatre, down at Humber Street or in favourite bars and cafes – and particularly those at the University which is a very special place for me.

I watched as the sun rose, it shone a light on different aspects of the city: a lorry driving over the Humber Bridge, the flagpole on top of the Guildhall, the ice on the water in Queen’s Gardens.

The sun also lit up the inside of the vigil shelter.  It made the wooden walls glow a lovely colour – reminding me of lots of different things – caramel, fudge and golden toast.  Had to stop thinking about that.  Made me feel hungry.  :)
